Justice Prevails: Four South African Policemen Arraigned for Torturing Nigerian Citizen
South African Republic – In the midst of a resurgence of xenophobic attacks on foreigners in South Africa, four police officers have been charged with torturing a Nigerian citizen. The suspects were apprehended on February 1st by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), and the victim’s case was closely monitored by the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg. According to Elizabeth Wale Ayodele, a consulate official, the victim was severely beaten to the point of coma for nine days. Mr. Andrew Idi, the Consul General, visited the victim after he awoke and opened a case with IPID. The consulate worked tirelessly, day and night, to ensure that justice was served. On Thursday, February 2nd, the four suspects will be arraigned in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The police officers had demanded the victim’s identification papers, and when he failed to produce them, they arrested him and allegedly assaulted and tortured him while he was detained.
